Saving On Data Center Costs The IBM Way

Imagine being able to walk into the IT manager's or CIO's office and telling them you're going to save 30% on data operations energy costs.

Sounds like a dream huh? Well IBM and Schneider Electric hope to make that dream come true. The two are partnering to develop new smarter buildings solutions to improve building energy performance.

It's already happening in fact. Bryant University has seen a 15% drop in energy consumption in its data center, and a similar savings campus wide.

The ability to grab savings not only in IT, but also in operational areas outside of IT, is critical, according to university officials.

It's pretty critical for any business today as well.

Schneider Electric technologies, such a Andover Continuum, provides monitoring and control of various building systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, access control, video and physical security. Being able to monitor, and adjust energy consumption on the fly in these areas can bring about the 30% savings, says the company..

It's the latest energy research to come out of IBM's ongoing Smarter Planet initiative.

"This is not about IBM," said IBM in a press statement. "It takes an ecosystem of organizations ... we really believe that working together we can create a smarter planet "

IBM is installing its first "customer-ready" end-to-end Smarter Building solution at it owns headquarters in Armonk, NY, and at a manufacturing facility in Minnesota. The technology connects data from the building management system, electrical meters, the IBM Maximo asset management system, weather data and other external information, and by using advanced analytics, offers up deeper information about energy consumption, operations and space usage.

Working with data centers has given Schneider extensive experience with technology that can offer drill-down data for operations that require continuous, precise measurements of countless activities.

So, just what would a 30% energy savings mean for your company, besides a huge pat on the back for IT?
