Moving From Sybase ASE to DB2 Is Easier Than Ever Now
Last year it deployed support to DB2 for syntax and features to make a smooth switch from Oracle Database to DB2. Now it's doing the same for Sybase applications and promising some serious cost savings opportunities to boot. IBM's DB2 SQL "skin" helps IT avoid the typical extensive and risky code changes necessary to move legacy applications. It also provides autonomics, deep compression, pureXML and other DB2 capabilities for keeping database costs even lower. It's all done using an emulation layer approach. For a more technical understanding of how it works, check out Conor's DB2 News and Personal Views blog posting. In some cases, DB2 SQL skin can let some legacy software run on DB2 without even recompiling, and, if there is enough capacity in the DB2 database, IT has the option of allocating that space for Sybase ASE applications as they can co-exist with DB2 apps on the same box and partition. That means less money spent on hardware and license costs. And once all is migrated and set, DB2's automatic self -tuning capabilities help DBAs get up to speed quickly on DB2 and eliminates many of today's mundane administrative tasks. That means valuable DBA time can be spent on more important and business-impacting efforts. |
